Custer, SD

We got into Custer on the 24th of July.  There is a ton to see in the Black Hills area and we saw most of it.  Wind Cave National Park was very interesting.  We saw lots of wild life including bison.  The first picture is from out our RV window.

Wind Cave is different than any cave I have seen in the eastern part of the country.  The formations are different and the cave is very dry.  the pic below show the "box work"  and the "popcorn" both formed by water but millions of years ago.

We went and saw the rock carving of Crazy Horse.  It is not far from Rushmore.  It was commissioned many years ago by tribal leaders to inform people that the Native Americans had heroes too.  The progress is slow and while it is impressive, there was more info about the sculptor than about Crazy Horse.  The first pic is how it looks now.  The second is a model of how it will look when it is done.  It is interesting that no public money has been used.  It is totally funded by tourist visits and gifts.  They have actually turned down public money twice.
